About
I’m Jonathan Vernon, a relief printmaker based in Lewes, Sussex. My work draws on the landscapes and histories that have shaped me – from the rugged edges of Hadrian’s Wall to the ancient woodlands I walk today.
I cut and print by hand, often incorporating chine collé to bring subtle shifts of colour and texture. Each print begins with sketches on site, then develops in the studio through carving, inking, and the slow reveal of the first proof. I handprint at home, or go to Bip-Art Brighton, where I was taught relief printmaking, and where I still return for classes and to use the presses.
My subjects are rooted in place and memory – a castle gatehouse, a felled sycamore, a veteran tree, ponies, people in the landscape – all seen through a lens that balances observation with a stylised, graphic simplicity.
